Do you plan your career or do you let the system around you do that? When was the last time you actually spent time and money to gain knowledge and skill towards building a career? I am sure many of you who read this vignette, have made similar choices and focussed on building their career.
In a moment, we will talk about "who is planning your career"? Before that I invite you to think that "after coming this high up in your career"- is just this enough for you or you wish to grow further?
To start with, let's think about when did you last plan to spend time and money to gain knowledge and skills, be it technical or soft skills. When did you last spend time and engage in a meanignful conversation with your coach about expanding your management and leadership skills, strengthening your professional network with those who can champion you, managing your manager, building your credibility and visibility with key stakeholders, creating opportunities within the organization, and strategies for stepping up to move up the corporate ladde
My guess, normally, last would have been either at undergrad or post-grad. The aim of choosing a subject or subjects at these levels of education was to build a career in this domain. But typically, once one enters the world of working 8-5 or 8-9, then career is about pursuing the path layed out by the system.
Assuming one did what one wanted to at the tertiary education level. At that point, when one looks for university/college, one draws up a list of them and priortizes and not to forget plans a back up too.
What happens when one kicks off the process of applying education in terms of real world job? How many plan for a backup?
Because one chooses a single path to the end goal, when sometimes for some reasons, it goes over some bumps, pauses or declines, it becomes a matter of life and death, of course otherwise it probably is a rat race to secure space on the ever narrowing path. Remember higher you grow the narrower is the path, lesser the space, and higher the competition. At this point, you must look at empowering yourself to grow further and stay ahead. Coaching is a way to gain that further success and growth. Coaching is not a band-aid, it is a form of education that takes you further to success.
Coming back to the point on who is planning and managing your career? Of course what a silly question, I hear you say. We plan our career, work hard, grow through the ranks, work our way through workplace dynamics. The significance of this question lies in the thin line between taking a job path and then working hard to get the next promo, and then the next, and when it becomes narrow and difficult and u dont get it for some reason, one feels cheated,angry, frustrated, and let down for all the hard work done.
So, the point is "You need to plan and manage your career."
1. Become aware of your strengths
2. Be clear at all time about what is your goal; set, evaluate, revisit, reset,
3. Evaluate your opportunities
4. Jump your paths [ops to HR to finance to becoming enterpreneur] if need be
5. Jump the types of market domains
6. Do not hesitate in re-skilling to take up a different job
7. Do not hesitate to engage a solid support who can be the catalyst, keep you on path, reflect your views, thoughts for you to evaluate--one who can empower you with ways to make decisions. Engage a coach.
8. Do not hesitate in netoworking.
So when did you last truely revisit the direction you are moving in? When did you last spend time and money to enhance your strengths? To seek positive support to work out a plan--when did you do that? Or is this how far you want to grow? If you wish to grow further, I invite you to pay yourself 10% of your time to empower with right inputs for growing at this stage. Engage a Coach!
